März 2008 im RüKONTOR (5. Etage), Rüttenscheider Straße 144, Essen-Rüttenscheid The theme of this lecture takes us back into the history of British-German relations in the 18th century. The world-famous composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was one of the many Germans who settled in England during this period. Born in Halle, he moved to London in 1712 and became a British subject in 1727. The lecture will discuss the community of Germans in 18th-century London, their achievements and the problems they encountered in establishing themselves. Their story is a surprising and littleknown aspect of the long history of British-German relations. Graham Jefcoate, who has been the director of the University Library of Nijmegen in The Netherlands since 2005, was born in Edmonton, Middlesex, England. He studied at Downing College, Cambridge (1970 – 73, MA in English Literature) and University College, London (1974 -75), where he received his Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Archive Studies. Before he worked for the British Library, London from 1988 – 2001 he spent seven years in Germany (1981 – 88) at the Westfälische Wilhelms- Universität, Münster; he was later Director General of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (2002 - 2003). Graham Jefcoate has published and spoken widely on aspects of 18th-century British-German cultural relations. Zu diesem Vortrag in englischer Sprache laden wir Sie herzlich ein.
